The Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellowship (AYCFF) is the flagship fellowship under the Africa Climate Ambassadors Programme (ACAP). It equips 30 young leaders from 18 African countries with the knowledge, tools, and networks to become climate finance champions and advocates for Africa’s just transition.

VISION: To build a generation of climate finance champions shaping Africa’s just transition.

MISSION: To equip young African leaders with skills, networks, and expertise to drive climate finance solutions.

The goals of the fellowship include to:

Build a cadre of climate finance champions capable of influencing policy and mobilizing resources.
Facilitate the development of innovative climate projects tailored to Africa’s needs.
Amplify Africa’s voice in global climate finance discussions through skilled advocacy.
Foster collaboration and partnerships among Africa’s future climate leaders.

Monica Mhina

Monica Mhina is a Social Policy Specialist at UNICEF Tanzania based in the Zanzibar Field Office. She leverages data to support the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to strengthen statistical systems, public financial management, social protection systems, research and evaluation to improve policies on social sectors (Education, Health, Nutrition, WASH, and Social Protection). Before UNICEF, Monica worked at Dalberg where she supported One Acre Fund to develop a Climate Finance Strategy for agroforestry carbon projects by assessing the revenue potential of entering the voluntary carbon market and analyzing the carbon offset sales of previous and current carbon projects in the African agroforestry space. She also supported the World Economic Forum on data analysis and modeling of the plastic life-cycle in two geographies (Nigeria and Mexico City), and the potential impact of interventions aimed at addressing plastic waste. The results of this analysis and modeling informed the country’s National Plastic Action Plans that are part of National Determined Contributions towards the Paris Agreement. While at Dalberg, Monica also supported the World Bank Africa Energy Access Flagship team to conduct research and analysis to identify and detail innovative ideas to accelerate electrification across different country ‘typologies’ in SSA. She also supported the KAS Foundation to conduct market research to identify gaps/opportunities in the African mining industry where circular economy solutions can be deployed in an actionable manner. As an Africa Youth Climate Finance Fellow, Monica aims to help tackle the biggest challenges Africa faces in adapting to and mitigating climate change...resources! Monica aims to push for more accessible climate finance and fair financial mechanisms that meet the needs of African communities at grassroots level and inspire youths to lead the way in innovating solutions. She is excited to continue working with governments to advocate and formulate policies and programs that empower children and youths, providing them with the tools and resources to lead climate initiatives in their own communities. Monica holds a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering (with a focus on Telecommunications Data Analysis) from McGill University in Canada, and a BSc with honors in Engineering (Electrical concentration) from Trinity College in Hartford, CT.

Macire Aribot Ashford is an emerging global and strategic leader with a background in international development, social justice, and public policy. She is the co-founder of NoirUnited International, a global development and humanitarian organization bringing together Africa and the diaspora to develop and implement community-based initiatives through youth and education, research and advocacy, and community resilience programs. Macire has led international projects across the US, Europe, and Africa, developed strategic partnerships with major philanthropic and humanitarian organizations, and liaised with government and civil society to advocate for the equitable distribution of resources. Most notably, she led NoirUnited’s humanitarian response to the Ukraine crisis, mobilizing over half a million dollars to support over 1,500 African refugees and students displaced by the war, with emergency relief, legal, mental health, and educational assistance. Her experience also includes consulting for UNICEF on youth entrepreneurship initiatives in Kenya, conducting policy research at Columbia University, and managing democracy-strengthening programs across Africa at the National Democratic Institute. Macire holds a Master of International Affairs in Economic and Political Development with an Africa specialization from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She received her Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and Global Development Studies from Mercer University.

These programs have solidified Clean Code’s position as a leader in the tech-for-good space. But Jack’s journey isn’t just about numbers and tech—it’s deeply rooted in his passion for creating lasting change. With his background as a Certified Peace Corps Eswatini youth counselor and eco-advocate, Jack’s heart is in empowering communities and advocating for environmental stewardship. Whether it’s through developing Crop Compass, an AI-driven app for farmers, or spearheading biodegradable personal care products, his work is always grounded in sustainability. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with a focus on Economics and Demography at the University of Eswatini, Jack’s academic focus aligns with his vision of bringing financial solutions to climate action. He’s determined to play a key role in climate finance and hopes to bridge the gap between innovation and finance to help build a greener future for all. Over the years, Jack’s work has garnered notable recognition. He was selected for the GSE Digital Startup Accelerator (2024) out of 1,000 global startups, was a quarter-finalist in the MIT Climate & Energy Prize (2024), and was a semi-finalist for the Mandela Washington Fellowship (2024). With his deep commitment to sustainability and innovative problem-solving, Jack Khumalo is poised to play a transformative role in the future of climate finance.

Jacquelyn Mando is the Chief Operating Officer of Clean Technology Hub, an organization on frontlines of driving Energy Access, Climate Action and Sustainable Entrepreneurship. She is a dedicated and professional management expert, and is experienced in leadership, organization development, and Corporate Operations. She has over 10+ years progressive experience in human resource management as well as IN management. Her professional experiences include executive level management, strategic program management, training/employee development, resource and budget forecasting, organizational development and employee relations. She has held a management position for nearly three years at Clean Technology Hub where she has led organizational transformation and restructuring. She is responsible for developing the Sustainable leadership project and has set up core succession planning principles and processes, and core leadership transition procedure. Along with other management staff, she is leading extensi decision-making around organizational expansion, and championing the communication of these transitions to partners and staf Jacquelyn received a Bachelor of Arts in International & Comparative Politics from the American University of Nigeria. She is a certified trainer of women in the energy sector under the Power Afri Nigeria Power Sector Program (PA-NPSP), an initiative of the USAID amongst others. She is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative West Africa.

We produce information aimed at young people, women and vulnerable people. Employed since 2022, I am in the major reporting team and I also deal with topics or questions related to agriculture, the environment or climate change. In addition to this, I am committed to my community with 10 years of experience in community engagement and more than 10 roles assumed. Furthermore, I hold a degree in corporate communications and public relations, a BAC+2 in English studies and am also certified in digital communications, community management and digital marketing. In terms of climate finance, I hope to have the necessary experience to boost my skills, to be a good climate negotiator. My academic credentials include a Master in science in Renewable Energy Engineering from Kingston University in England and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Mahsa University in Malaysia. I have also completed capacity building in climate negotiation processes from the Institute of Francophonie for Sustainable Development (IFDD) and greenhouse gas inventory methodologies, underscoring my deep understanding of climate science and policy. In 2024, i was selected for the Global Green Economy Young Leaders Program by WGEO, where i contributed to a capstone project focused on studying the green economy transition in Comoros. I represented Comoros at COP29 as a climate negotiator, advocating for the nation’s priorities in the fight against climate change. I am dedicated Youth and Climate Change Focal Point at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) Somalia, with a strong background in environment, climate change, and sustainable development. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Environmental Science from Somali National University and I currently pursuing a master’s degree in Environment, Peace, and Development at the United Nations University for Peace. I have actively represented Somalia on global climate platforms, serving as a youth climate negotiator and Somali delegates at COP28 in Dubai and COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. I also a Youth delegate at the Regional Conference of Youth (RCOY) Africa 2024 in Rabat, Morocco, where I contributed to high-level discussions on youth engagement in climate action, adaptation, and climate mobility. My professional achievements include coordinating youth-led climate initiatives, formulating policy documents, and National Consultant for developing National Environmental and Climate Action and Engagement Plan for Youth and Children in Somalia. I have played a key role in Somalia’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) training workshops, ensuring that young voices are included in climate resilience strategies. Additionally, I have worked on climate security, loss and damage, migration, and forestry negotiations at both national and international levels. With a deep commitment to climate finance, I aspire to enhance youth access to climate funding and develop innovative financing mechanisms to support adaptation and mitigation projects in Somalia. In his role, Tobechukwu leads efforts to implement innovative, data-driven, and community-focused climate solutions, empowering vulnerable populations and driving sustainable development. With a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, and several certificates in courses related to climate change and social work, Tobechukwu combines analytical expertise with practical experience to address the challenges of climate change. His work has been recognized globally, including being awarded the prestigious title of Peace Ambassador by the International Association of Peace Advocates, in collaboration with the Rivers State Government and the United Nations, for his outstanding contributions to peacebuilding and climate justice. Tobechukwu is the writer and chief researcher of The Heartbeat Documentary, which premiered at the COP29 Climate Hub, amplifying the voices of communities impacted by oil exploration and climate change. He also spearheaded the Look Beyond Oil Campaign, a groundbreaking initiative that garnered over 300,000 online streams and brought together 200 key stakeholders from the Niger Delta region and around the world to explore sustainable alternatives to oil dependency. As a leader, Tobechukwu oversees a team of over 100 young volunteers and climate champions, mentoring them through initiatives such as the Lincgreen Climate Academy, where he serves as lead trainer. His academy equips participants with the skills and knowledge to drive impactful climate action and sustainable development. Aspiring to make a significant impact in climate finance, Tobechukwu aims to bridge the gap in resource accessibility for underserved communities. In this role, I lead efforts to operationalize country- specific data standards, design innovative data collection tools, and produce high-quality visualizations using platforms such as Power BI to inform decision-making in humanitarian operations. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from St. Joseph University in Tanzania and am currently pursuing an MSc in Data Science at the University of East London. My academic journey has equipped me with advanced skills in data analytics, machine learning, and predictive modeling, which I apply to solve complex challenges in the humanitarian and development sectors. Previously, I worked with One Acre Fund as a Program Innovation Research Manager, where I directly contributed to initiatives that align with climate finance principles. My responsibilities included evaluating the effectiveness of agricultural innovations, analyzing field trials, and supporting mobile repayment systems for over 50,000 smallholder farmers. These efforts enhanced farmers' access to sustainable financing, improved resource management, and increased resilience to climate shocks. In addition, as a UNHCR Innovation Fellow, I spearheaded the design and implementation of a carpooling system that optimized resource utilization and reduced operational costs in Tanzania. This experience strengthened my ability to design innovative, data-driven solutions in resource-constrained environments. Looking ahead, I am deeply passionate about advancing climate finance initiatives by leveraging my expertise in data science and innovation. With a strong passion for environmental sustainability, biodiversity preservation and cultural heritage, she has dedicated her life to empowering communities and championing innovative solutions to global challenges. As the co-founder of the Action for Community and Biodiversity, she has spearheaded initiatives to protect marine ecosystems and enhance the resilience in costal communities in Southern of Madagascar. Her groundbreaking project, such a seaweed farming for CO2 sequestration and sustainable livelihoods, earned her the prestigious African Climate Innovation Challenge award in 2023. An intern in Medical School at the University of Mahajanga, Raissa bridges her scientific knowledge with environmental advocacy to promote health resilience and adaptation in face of climate change. She also a tour guide, committed to showcasing Madagascar’s unique culture and Biodiversity while raising awareness about the intersection about the heritage preservation and environmental sustainability. Her leadership journey includes participation in the UNESCO International Youth Forum, the Community Engagement Exchange Program, and African Youth Climate Assembly. Alexandre Mahougnon Aurel Zoumman has been a research assistant at CIRAD and a PhD candidate at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar since October 2020, specializing in Plant and Microbial Biotechnology since 2022. He holds a Master’s degree in the same field, obtained in 2020 from UCAD, through the Intra-Africa SCIFSA scholarship. His academic journey began with a Bachelor’s in Natural Sciences from the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin. Alexandre’s exceptional academic performance also earned him a DAAD scholarship from Germany for his PhD and an Orange Knowledge Programme scholarship from the Dutch government in 2024. These international experiences have shaped his expertise in climate resilience, agroecology, molecular biology, and sustainable management. His research focuses on combating soil salinization through halotolerant microorganisms to promote accessible and ecological solutions for farmers. He has also contributed to scientific knowledge through his publication on plant-microorganism interactions, specifically the T3SS symbiotic pathway. Beyond academia, Alexandre’s work with institutions like Wageningen University and the Institute for Tropical Technology and Sciences has strengthened his knowledge of climate change adaptation and food system analysis. His commitment to capacity building led to the co-founding of the Youth Alliance for Agroecology and Climate (YAAC) in Senegal in 2023, aiming to empower youth and women in the environmental sector and advocate for climate justice. With a BSc Hons in Biological Sciences from Sol Plaatje University (SPU) and an undergraduate degree from North-West University (NWU), I have developed expertise in environmental research and data analysis. Currently, I am expanding my knowledge and skills as a Junior ESG/Sustainability Analyst at the Integrated Reporting and Assurance Services (IRAS). Over the past six months, I have gained hands-on experience in analysing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosures of Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)-listed companies. My responsibilities include reviewing annual reports to contribute to the Sustainability Data Transparency Index (SDTI), conducting quality assurance reviews to ensure data accuracy, and consolidating quarterly SDTI evaluations into a comprehensive database for further analysis. Through this work, I have developed a keen eye for data accuracy, corporate sustainability reporting trends, and materiality assessments. In addition to data analysis, I have played an active role in training and mentoring interns on ESG disclosure analysis, ensuring alignment with IRAS methodologies. Furthermore, I have developed Peer Data Assessment Reports and Material Issues Comparability Analyses to help clients enhance their ESG reporting practices. My role has also involved preparing Management Reports to support assurance services and assisting in evaluating coursework for the Certified Sustainability Assurance Practitioner (CSAP) program. Beyond my ESG research experience, I have a strong background in ecological research and community engagement. My technical skills include Microsoft Office, ArcMap, and RStudio, which I use for data analysis and sustainability research. I work as a lecturer in Dire Dawa University under the college of mechanical and industrial engineering. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am actively engaged as a member of the Ethiopian Clean Cooking Alliance, where I collaborate with experts and organizations to promote sustainable energy solutions in Ethiopia. My educational background includes a Bsc. in mechanical engineering from Dire Dawa University and an Msc. In thermal engineering from Addis Ababa University. Throughout my academic journey, I have developed a deep understanding of the engineering challenges and opportunities in advancing cleaner, more efficient cooking solutions for communities that rely on traditional biomass fuels. Professionally, one of my key achievements has been contributing to research on cost-effective clean cookstoves that could significantly reduce health risks, deforestation, and generate low voltage electricity. She has over ten years of experience in social justice programming and campaigning. Currently, Norwu is the Youth and Climate Justice Program Coordinator at ActionAid Liberia, focusing on youth development, climate justice, natural resource governance, economic justice, resilient livelihood, and gender responsive public serves. She leads programs that are aimed at transforming societies to become more just, feminist, green and resilient, and manages Global Platform Liberia – an ActionAid youth-led social justice advocacy platform. She also serves as a board member at Helping Our People Excel Inc.; is a founding member of March for Justice – a social justice movement and mentor young people in rural and urban communities. Norwu holds a master's degree in public administration. She is also a fellow of the Sister-to-Sister Mentorship, a program of the Nobel Women’s Initiative and the Coady Leadership Institute. She works to ensure a just and equal society in which everyone enjoys his/her rights to a life of dignity. Since 2020, Norwu has worked and supported women and young people to co-create climate solutions which helped to keep them motivated to engage. Over the past years, her work has directly reached over fifteen thousand people and indirectly reached over two million people through digital engagements. My background in Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering from Rivers State University has provided me with a deep understanding of systems and sustainability, which I now channel into Smart Fleet. Our focus on electric mobility is a direct response to the environmental crises that disproportionately affect Nigeria’s vulnerable communities, including the rising costs of fuel and electricity.
